Week 9 : Begin Final Projects / Image Hose and Custom Textures
This week, we will begin our final projects, explore the image hose to create custom textures, and I thought we'd review a possible animation style.

IMAGE HOSES:
Images hoses are perfect if you wanted to create a custom pattern, texture or if you know you don't want to keep repeating the same thing over and over again.

  1. Make a new layer and draw whatever you like repeated as a nozzle.
  2. Save this as a group (command + G).
  3. Go to your tools palette > lower right hand corner you'll find the image hose selector.
  4. Click the upper right hand corner options palette arrow.
  5. Select : Make Nozzle from Group.
  6. Save this file on your desktop.
  7. Now load this nozzle: Click the upper right hand corner options palette arrow.
  8. Select : Load Nozzle
  9. In your main image. Select the image hose and begin painting.

Week 8 : Visual Effects
This week, we shot footage and painted visual effects on them, utilizing various brushes from the vfx brush. We also learned about recording scripts and how to animate in Painter utilizing the Frame Stack Controller.

BEGIN FINAL PROJECT ::
For your homework this week, use the form provided for you in class to submit your idea for the final project. The document will detail what you plan to do, list or provide reference shots or URL, and a two day breakdown of what you intend to complete during Week 9 and Week 10. We will be reviewing these final projects Week 11 and it counts for 25 percent of your grade. Do your best, I will be holding you to portfolio review standards on this project.

• 3 - 5 Character Set (Vector Style - Check VGcat.com for styling).
• 3 - 5 Gaming Graphic Set. Textures: Using the impasto brush.
• 5 - 10 second VFX shot.
• A matte painting attached to a movie file.
• 2 - 3 Conceptual Designs.
• A still life of an object you like.
• A Time Magazine Caricature.
• A 10 - 15 second animation.
• An animation done on existing footage.

Week 7 : Clone Painting
Today we will be clone painting. Its a feature in our software that offers very quick ways to get an illustrated look from a photograph. Before we learn this method, what is the difference you see between a photograph and a painting? Also, is this a form of cheating?

Topics Covered Today:
• Clone Tool / Tracing Paper Technique.
• Clone Tool / Turning a photo into a painting.
• Textures: Using the impasto brush.

clone brush
Images created using the Charcoal and the Sargent Artist brushes.

Using the clone tool:

1) Set up
1. Find a photograph that you like and bump up the saturation so that the colors are bright.

2. Make a clone of the image.
File>Clone>Save Image as "call it whatever you wantt" and save it on to the desktop.

3. Click on the first image.

4. Open up the layers pallete and make a new layer.

2) Start cloning

1. Choose the clone image.
File>Clone Source>choose your first file

2. Choose a brush.

3. Set the clone brush. To do this, go the color wheel and click the clone stamp icon. Look at image below. When you press this button, your colors will gray out and will no longer be usable. You will be painting using the existing colors in the cloned image.

3) Start Painting

  • Begin painting on the layer above the canvas (the new layer you just made).
  • Apply the paint texture everywhere. Some brushes to use are the artist brushes, or the impasto brushes. Muck it up. Every good painting starts with a destruction phase.
  • Bring focus back into the image by using the eraser to remove textures in unwanted areas.

ASSIGNMENT:
Create a diptech by placing two images you've created together. To make this piece engaging to the viewer focus on contrast (in texture, value and color) and also focus on compisition. Where do you want us to look first, and what path should our eye follow. This is a sign of mature and experienced image making.

Matte Painter I
This week, we will try our hand at matte painting, by building on our atmospheric perspective last week. It requires that we explore lots of things from design, composition and detail, so we will spreadit over two weeks.

This week we will be covering:

  • Ryan Church Demo Review.
  • In Class Assignment I : Atmospheric Perspective Matte Painting Set up..
  • Dylan Cole Demoreel and Review.
  • In Class Assignment II : Create a rough background over an existing photographic image. Complete/Rough blockin a matte painting. Focus on atmospheric perspective and color matching.

Week 3: Color Sensitivity Training (Color Comps)
This week, we will be training our sense of color as preparation for the matte painting exercise next week. These are traditional painting techniques applied to the digital medium.

To do this, we will be covering:

  • Color matching.
  • Value matching.
  • Composition.
  • Basic atmospheric perspective.
  • Comparing values in on your painting
  • Blending to establish a focal point.
    Lecture on Color:
Is color important? Is the sky always blue? Phsychological impacts of color and its use in design.

    Color Comp Demo:

    IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT 1:
    Match the color squares.

    IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT 2:
Color comp assignment. Follow the procedure for creating these color comps.

  1. Create a matching canvas.
  2. Apply a gray tone (midtone) background.
  3. Sketch in you composition (use a dark red). Be sure to match angles to get simplified shapes. NO DETAIL at this point.
  4. On this sketch layer, begin your blockin
  5. Match in this order: HUE > VALUE > SATURATION
  6. Work from the back of your painting to the foreground applying atmospheric perspective as you go.
  7. Apply blending to establish a focal point.
  8. Label your color comp by placing the name of your brush an the type of blender you used.
