Week 9: Welcome Back
FINAL / EXIT EXAM: You will be tested on the following terms listed on this review sheet. The review sheet can be downloaded by clicking here.

FINAL PROJECTS: Please be sure you follow the parameters for the final assignment. TIP: You will be graded heavily on craft and presentation.

Assignment: Enlarge one of your thumbnail designs.

I will be grading you on the following:

Critique Checkin
Size 11"x11". Image area to be 6"x6".
Include crop marks and bleed
Craft and presentation (neatness).
Include a matt
Tracing paper cover.
Ai label on the reverse.

The image must be clear, and must have a definate focal point. Make it good, make it excellent.

Wednesday Class: Your final piece is due this week.
Thursday Classes: Your final piece is due the following week, but the critique checkin is on the day of the final.



Week 7: Balance and Proportion
Principles of Design: (Memorize these terms for your final). Harmony, Variety, Balance, Proportion, Dominance, Movement and Economy.

Balance Terms: (Please know the differences of each and be able to draw and example of each, the definitions are found on page 28 in your text) Symmetry, Approximate Symmetry, Radial Symmetry, Asymmetry

Proportion Terms: Scale, Golden Mean,

HOMEWORK:
1) Illustrate 5 of terms above with the theme of "Fantasy". The definitions are found on page 28. Please add lables and be sure work is in a protective sleeve for maximum points. Please watch neatness

2) The second homework should look like something below. There are two parts to this assignment. You will be learning contrast, balance and proportion, shape and line dexterity, control, harmony and presentation.



For the first part, you will need tracing paper, a black pigma pen or prismacolor marker, and a magazine.
Take the tracing paper and trace a letterform in pen (it can also be an entire word). Afterwards, find contrasting letterforms that will interact or be placed next to the first letterforms. Strive for balance. Outline and fill in these forms with black pen. Do 4 - 5 combinations. TIP: The more the forms contrast one another, the more interesting they will be. Contrast examples; big vs. small. curved vs. straight.

The second part of the homework:
Enlarge one set of the letterforms to fit in a 6x6 image area. Mount this on an 11x11 in board as stated above.

Week 6: Harmony and Variety
Principles of Design: Harmony, Variety, Balance, Proportion, Dominance, Movement and Economy.
Please study the significance of these terms, how are they different from the Elements of Design and what do they mean?

HOMEWORK:
1) Goache to create a full value composition. Use your original drawing as reference. TIP: Wait for the gouache to dry, once it is dry add sharpening and detail with your colored pencil. Do the best you can. Keep it simple by using only one color.

Thursday afternoon class: You are also to do 5 squares on the texture terms found on page 128. Have fun an please include your labels. They are worth 18 points.



Week 5: Texture
Texture: The surface character of a material that can be experienced through the sense of touch, OR the illusion of touch.

HOMEWORK:
1) Illustrate 5 of the texture terms that we reviewed on page 128. The theme and subject matter is open. Feel free to collage and use cut out pieces of paper or props to arrange compositions in the box.

2) In the golden rectangle provided, create a full value composition using the high contrast photo from last week. Use the rubout technique demonstrated in class to help you achieve a full range of value. I will be grading on neatness and craft, creativity and sensitity, cropmarks, bleed area and cover sheet.

Thursday Class from 1 - 5 is only responsible to do homework item number 2. NOT homework item no.1. Everyone else is required to do both 1 and 2.

OTHER ITEMS COVERED TODAY:
1) The creative job interview: resume, portfolio and interview requirements.
2) Graphite rubout technique demonstratino in which you use a mackeup applicator to establish a no. 3 middle value, add the drawing and the darks and complete the drawing by picking ou the lightest values with a kneaded rubber eraser.



Week 4: Value
Great work today everyone! As you know, I teach this class three times during the week. Because of presentations from guest speakers the last two weeks, the class schedule is different per class. Please look at your section to view the homework for the work. This week, we covered the topic of "Value", the difference of light and dark of an object. Keep up the great work and please let me know if there are any questions.

Memorize the characteristics of light and shadow as we had discussed in class.

• 5 squares, each square illustrating 5 of the terms on "Value" page 112.
Be sure you use pen, add color, and you keep the theme of "Not sure what our theme was, here if you read this, please let me know and I'll post it", please add labels, and strive for refinement sensitivity and a high level of craft. - 10 points for every item not covered.
• Shading Sheet started in class.


Thursdays 1 - 4:50 am:
• 5 squares, each square illustrating 5 of the terms on "Value" page 112.
Be sure you use pen, add color, and you keep the theme of "Halloween", please add labels, and strive for refinement sensitivity and a high level of craft. - 10 points for every item not covered.
• Shading Sheet started in class.
• High contrast drawing. I will be looking at refinement and detail of line (bleeding) and accuracy.




Week 3: Shape
Items covered today: Shape terms pages 90 - 105 in the text. Keeping a sketchbook, this is the primary way you get better as a designer. It gives you insight into your personal visual language and it can also pay off monetarily. High Contrast Drawing Assignment (see Frankenstein below).

Guess the logo: Look at the images below and see if you can guess the company. We did this exercise in class to see how important shape (letteforms) are in visual communication. Please mark the ones you do not know and let's see if we can figure this out. As you can see, its easier to gauge the company by looking at the color.

HOMEWORK

Assignment 1: Download the 5 squares from this page and illustrate 5 shape terms illustrating the theme of "Fruit". Outline the image in pen and add color using marker. Add labels to the bottome of each square as we have done in class last week. Submit this in a clear plastic sleeve. You will be graded on neatness, creativity and how well you follow the rules a parameters.

Assignment 2: Download the golden rectangle found on this page and create a high contrast drawing. The main imagery is black or white. NO GRAYS (please see the image of Frankenstein). Work on an interesting layout and do your best to see and capture the detail in the shadow shapes. The best pieces happen when the artist is sensitive to this detail.

Week 2: Enlarging Thumbnails

Items covered today: Listening as a leadership quality, time management, the portfolio and what is it, an online portfolio, pasting labels on to your squares, and enlarging your thumbnails.

Below is a revised handout on the enlargement process. I hope it clears things up. If you do not understand please let me know. Remember that the purpose of this exercise is to get you used to creating images in a format acceptable to professional graphic standards. Do your best.

HOMEWORK:
1. Be sure your 5 squares are labled with the correct terms from last week's discussion on "Line".
2. Complete the above assignment and be sure you follow all of the requirements for full credit.
3. Read the definitions on page 90 in your text about the next section "Shape."

Week 1: Welcome

Great work everyone! Today, we learned the importance of the Elements of Design.

LINE: Read the section about the first Element of Design: Line, found in your Art Fundamentals textbook.

• Demo: Inking and how to transfer a drawing.
• Overview of your toolkit.

Homework:
In the five squares provided. Use the first letter of your name as a theme and illustrate the five terms we studied in class. Use the tracing paper transfer technique to lay your image out in the box in an interesting way. Play with size and scale by making some of images small, med, or large or xlarge where in its cropped off the page.

Bring to class next week, your media kits, and illustraiton board.
