Storyboarding

Downloads

Week 10: Homestretch.
This week, we studied the works of Alfed Hitcock, one of film's greatest directors and who was notorious for storyboarding out very complex shots in order to achieve suspense and drama in his movies. His most famous is in the movie "Psycho". Below is an interview where he talks about cutting / mosaic, point of view, and continuity.

Also below is a link to a storyboarding company, please view a board style from 5 different artists to gain a wider understanding of the styles out there.

For some Alfred Hitchcock Trivia, click the image below:

And here is the Hitcock Interview I told you about. The shower scene is in this clip. Be sure you lock the door when you take a shower okay guys?

HOMEWORK:
Complete your final project. Remember that it comprises 25 percent of your grade. This is worth 100 points. 50 points for the storyboards, and 50 for the animatic.

Grading:
I will be grading you on the following, be sure you use these as a checklist so you can get the maximum points available.

For your storyboards:
I will be grading you on neatness, clarity and shot composition. These can be digital.

For you animatic:
I will be grading you on continuity and pacing (don't hold an image too long, and don't hold an image so short that we can't see anything). A good thing to do is to show someone and see if they get. Very important. Lots of people lose points because they don't pay attention to this.

- It must be in a format that we can view, either quicktime, .swf, or .wmv file. 15 - points
- It must have a soundtrack. 15 points
- It must at least 3 soundeffects. 10 points
- It must have an opening and closing page. 10 points

EXTRA CREDIT:
Stick around, we will be sketching the shower scene from Psycho. These drawings will take the place of a missing assignment.

Good Luck

Week 9: Animatic Video Tutorial / Shot Composition Review.
This week, we studied the compositions of the animation "Fallen Art". Continue to work on your final projects.

Flash Animatic Video Tutorial Posted
As requested, a video tutorial about creating an animatic in Flash can be found by clicking the link below. In the tutorial, we cover importing images, adjustiing and editing the timeline, publishing, hot keys and tips to stay organized.

HOMEWORK:
Work on your second group of storyboards.
The soundroom is reserved from 1 - 3 pm. for you to record dialogue if needed.

Week 8: Storyarchs & The Villain.
This week, we studied storyarchs and the importance of the villain. We could see in Rocky III how compositions reflect the storyarch and we see a great performance from Mr. T in portraying one of the villains, Clubber Lange.

If you haven't gotten your fill of Clubber Lang yet, hopefully this will do, I stumbled upon a Youtube compilation of the guy and it should do the trick.

We also covered how to create panels in Photoshop, and we covered how to create an animatic in Premiere. I'll work to make a tutorial about these...stay tuned.

In creating Photoshop panels break the work up into four tasks:

  • Composition
  • Construction (sketching and drawing your figure)
  • Value (use the pick out technique and break your values down to three basic tones: lights, mediums and darks - dark accents too for a punch).
  • Refinement (make your drawing clear)

HOMEWORK:
Draw your first 18 panels.
Be aware of your production schedule.

Week 7: Thumnail your final project.
This week, begin thumbnailing your 36 panels for your final project.

Week 6: Begin Your Final Storyboarding Assignment.
This week, you will begin conceptualizing for your final assignment.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT:
Create a 36 panel storyboard and a working animatic. The idea and concept will be open. Please watch the schedule for what is due on a weekly basis. An excellent example of an animatic is below. The sound is incredible.

HOMEWORK:
• Review the section in your text regarding "Continuity".
• Submit a typed write up explaining your final project.
• Submit a typed rough outline of the shots yous intend to use.

Week 5: Complete Midterm Assignment
This week, finalize your storyboards. Below is a storyboard pitch for Lion King which you may find helpful. Have fun.

Week 4: Begin Midterm Assignment
This week, we began our midterm assignment. It has been a pleasure meeting all of you and I look forward to seeing more of your work as the quarter develops.

Below is a link to set of storyboards that I created for a fellow faculty member. I think you will find interesting. Your midterm boards should have good composition, shot variety, and should be clear. They should be outlined in pen and should have value (shading using markers). Feel free to use the computer if you feel it will improve the presentation of your work.

Randolf's Storyboards:

TOPICS COVERED THIS WEEK:
Why storyboarding? Where is it used?
• Importance of Composition
• Blocking exercise. Draw the compositions you see on screen and save them for your reference. We are expanding our visual vocabulary of "The Shot" and we will do this every week with a different movie.
• How to draw and sketch utilizing basic shape and line.
•The power of line and its phsychology. What emotion do jagged lines suggest?
• Rule of Thirds and The Golden Mean as it relates to composition.
• Camera Shot terminology. Most common: BEV, OTS, CUT, MS, LS, CU, ECU
• The 180 degree rule.
• Flow in your boards. Zooming in and out. Fly on the wall viewpoint.

Storyboard Arch: Setting, introduce the character, introduce the problem, show the resolution (does the character overcome the problem, or does he fail?)
